The Oregon Wine Press shared an article this month about the crafting of our kosher Pinot Noir: AlexEli makes sabbath-ready red in the Willamette's East Valley.

182 cases of AlexEli kosher Pinot Noir will be available in early February 2012!

The Oregon Wine Press included the AlexEli 2009 Blumen Von Gewurztraminer in December's value pick dessert wines and had this to say:

"A cornucopia of fascinating flavors make for an intriguingly interesting and temptingly tasty sipper. Carnations, honey and buttered toast are the yin to the yang of white pepper with hints of herbs, spices and citrus."

We're in the middle of harvest here at AlexEli - long days, cold fingers, beautiful fruit and so much juice! It is the most beautiful time of year watching all of the fruit come into the winery, surrounded by friends and family that have found time to help pick, press and get sticky. The Riesling is the last to come in and should be pressed by the weekend, followed by time in the winery as fermentation starts. By Thanksgiving we will be ready to truly celebrate another harvest completed here at AlexEli and hope you join us that weekend to toast the season!

In the News: Kosher Wine

We bottled our first kosher Pinot Noir in October, making AlexEli Oregon's only kosher wine producing vineyard! Abra Cohen came out to write a piece for The Jewish Daily Forward: Oregon's Lone Kosher Vintner.

The kosher Pinot Noir will be available to purchase in February 2012. A huge thank you to Rabbi Avrohom Perlstein and Rabbi Menachem Rivkin (pictured left destemming the 2011 kosher Pinot) for all of their help!

The newest member of our AlexEli family (and top shelf wine guy) Joe Jensen of Compass Wines & Spirits, is focused on bringing our hand crafted wines to the restaurants and wine shops of the Chicago and Illinois marketplace.

Winemaker Phil Kramer spent two days in Chicago meeting the restaurant and wine shop owners with Joe and we look forward to working with him as he shares our passion for sustainability in the vineyard and craftsmanship in the wine making process.

From the Vineyard: Re-Trellising

In the vineyard we're making plans to re-trellis the vines from the current Geneva Double-Curtain to Vertical Shoot Positioning. We've begun this process by leaving suckers near the bottom of the existing trunks with hopes to train them to a new fruiting wire next spring. The inspiration of this transformation lays in the idea that productivity of the vineyard relies on the balance of vigor, disease control, ideal ripening conditions, determination of yield and ease of maintenance.
